SVT College of Home Science has been my second home for 3 years as I pursued my Bachelors in Dietetics. This institution and the extremely experienced and very approachable faculties have groomed me holistically; enabling me to be at par in most fields including textiles, mass communication, environmental sciences, social sciences, art etc leave alone nutrition. I’m a proud alumni of SVT as it has not only empowered me academically but also taught me life skills and key attitudes such as being humble, to continue to learn and help those in need! Through this small testimonial, I’d like to thank my dear college and dearest teachers for their contributions in my life.

I typed and deleted many a sentences in an attempt to put it as beautifully and strongly the emotion that attaches me with SVT. The pen is mightier than the sword as it is said, but I don’t think I am going to do justice in these few words for the life my education with SVT has earned me. I stumbled into SVT as a confused teenager not knowing what path life has in store. The bumps and speed breakers made me what I am today. The hours and hours that we invested in projects and presentations and culinary cooking delights have all paid off. Well I must add. My teachers are the reason I am what I am today. My diction, my personality, my knowledge (which was flooded and loaded with information from all sides) and my adaptability - I have may have graduated with a degree in dietetics but I was made number one in every path a woman needs to take in life including child psychology (and how I thank you today when I can deal adapt fully with my two girls). My life is an integration of all the biochemistry, human physiology, food science, nutrition and microbiology that my loving hard working zestful teachers weaved so beautifully for me.  A big shout out to Dr. Jagmeet Madan, Dr. Godhia, Dr. Ramaswamy – I love you and THANK you for making me ‘me’

I have completed my graduation in ‘Food Science and Nutrition’ specializing in ‘Dietetics’ from S.V.T. College of Home Science which has enabled me to fulfil my desire and aspirations to excel in the field of Science in an extremely focused subject of ‘Nutrition’. The curriculum is centred to provide a strong foundation in your specific specialization of Home Science for instance for me it was ‘Food Science & Nutrition: Dietetics’ and at the same time it included selective subjects from the field of  ‘Home Science’ of other departments or specializations making it a highly inter disciplinary field. The course adds value to learning providing a holistic training that culminates finally to confer upon you a graduate degree in ‘Home Science’ in your specialization. Besides the nutrition related subjects the course offers subjects from the field of ‘Human development’ which has enabled me to gain an understanding of the principles of  human behaviour and psychology that can even be applied in the field of eating and food psychology. The emphasis on communication and language has enhanced my written and verbal communication that has helped me in being an excellent orator on a public platform and improved the usage of appropriate communication skills in my professional and personal life. Subjects from the field of ‘Textiles and Clothing’ has taught me life skills which has a high utility. ‘Consumer education’ and ‘Personal finance’ from the field of ‘Family Resource Management’ has helped me be autonomous, aware and have a sense of responsibility towards my own finances. The subjects like ‘Leadership development’, ‘Women in changing India’and the extension work taught has not only made me socially responsible but also built in me the capacity to contribute to Nation development by being sensitive towards various social issues and working towards their betterment. The faculty members are an expert in their fields and create an open and inclusive learning environment. They inculcate a scientific attitude and also provide equal opportunities to showcase our talents, strengths and attributes. Each faculty member puts in immense effort in upgrading their knowledge and keeping in touch with new technology and encourage the student to develop a research culture through guidance for seminar presentation. The entire college is spacious with adequate infrastructure for extra-curricular activities, sports, NSS and recreation. I used to make use of the locker facilities provided by the college, this is extremely useful for students considering the materials that one requires to carry for Home Science practical classes. The college is easily accessible and the timings are suitable to add on to the convenience and ease so as to encourage regularity in attendance. The food laboratories are equipped with adequate facilities and instruments for the subject of nutrition, clinical nutrition, food science, biochemistry, food analysis, food microbiology, food preservation and sports nutrition. I believe this is the only college in Home Science in India that has ‘Exercise physiology and sports nutrition’ taught at the under-graduate level as a part of the curriculum. It has also enhanced my entrepreneurial skills through the subjects of ‘Food Preservation Practical’ and ‘Quantity Food Production Practical’. The quantity food production is conducted in the lab equipped with facilities for bulk cookery adjoining to a cafeteria which is run by the students as a part of the subject. The college has played a vital role in instilling within me a professional attitude. It has also inculcated within me both a scientific temper as well as human values. The day I completed my graduation, it was not just the degree that I had received but I gained education in the true sense, it transformed me to a much confident person who had learnt new skills and knowledge with which I am able to contribute value to the society. The subjects in the field of nutrition were so well taught that it has etched permanently within me foundational principles of diet and nutrition on which I can lay additional information and also it has made me think rationally as I research and contribute to the development of the field of nutrition. I am extremely grateful to my institute as it has shaped me to be the person I am today.
