World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated every year from 1 to 7 August to encourage breastfeeding and to improve the health of babies around the world. It commemorates the Innocenti Declaration signed in August 1990 by government policymakers, WHO, UNICEF and other organizations to protect, promote and support breastfeeding.

World Breastfeeding Week aims to highlight the huge benefits that breastfeeding can bring to both, the health and welfare of babies, as well as a wider push for maternal health.

Breastfeeding is the best way to provide infants with the nutrients they need. WHO recommends exclusive breastfeeding starting within one hour after birth until a baby is 6 months old. Nutritious complementary foods should then be added while continuing to breastfeed for up to 2 years or beyond.

Department of Food, Nutrition and Dietetics, Sir Vithaldas Thackersey College of Home Science (Empowered Autonomous Status), offers courses like ‘Maternal and Child Nutrition’ and ‘Public Health Nutrition’ as the Discipline Specific Elective Courses which focus on promotion of correct breast feeding practices for the benefit of the Mother and the Child. The department, in collaboration with the Department of Human Development, plans to organise an event to celebrate the World Breastfeeding Week in the first week of August 2020, with the objective to sensitize the students towards the importance of Breast Feeding.

The event will include Display of Posters made by the students on various aspects related to importance, promotion and right practice of breast feeding. Experts from the field of Maternal and Child Nutrition, Breastfeeding Promotion Network of India (BPNI) will be invited to create awareness among students about the importance of Breast Feeding

World Mental Health Day is observed on 10 October every year, with the overall objective of raising awareness of mental health issues around the world and mobilizing efforts in support of mental health.

Adolescence is a crucial period for developing and maintaining social and emotional habits important for mental well-being. An estimated 10–20% of adolescents globally experience mental health conditions, yet these remain under diagnosed and under treated.

Emotional disorders commonly emerge during adolescence. In addition to depression or anxiety, adolescents with emotional disorders can also experience excessive irritability, frustration or anger. Symptoms can overlap across more than one emotional disorder with rapid and unexpected changes in mood and emotional outbursts.

Globally, depression is the fourth leading cause of illness and disability among adolescents aged 15–19 years and fifteenth for those aged 10–14 years. Anxiety is the ninth leading cause for adolescents aged 15–19 years and sixth for those aged 10–14 years. Social withdrawal can exacerbate isolation and loneliness. At its worse, depression can lead to suicide.

Nutritional neuroscience is an emerging discipline shedding light on the fact that nutritional factors are intertwined with human cognition, behavior, and emotions. Depression is more typically thought of as strictly biochemical-based or emotionally-rooted. On the contrary, nutrition can play a key role in the onset as well as severity and duration of depression. Many of the easily noticeable food patterns that precede depression are the same as those that occur during depression. These may include poor appetite, skipping meals, and a dominant desire for sweet foods.

M.Sc. Specialized Dietetics, Department of Food, Nutrition and Dietetics, Sir Vithaldas Thackersey College of Home Science (Empowered Autonomous Status), in collaboration with Department of Human Development would organise a half day Seminar on Significance of Nutrition in Mental Health & Illness and behaviour change. It would be a student led seminar comprising of lectures by eminent personalities in the field of nutrition and mental health followed by an interactive workshop.

YOGA is a discipline to improve or develop one’s inherent power in a balanced manner. It offers the means to attain complete self-realization.

YOGA is a physical, mental, or spiritual practice that originated from India and it describes the complete way of life. YOGA is not all about exercise but to discover the sense and identify yourself.

The idea of international YOGA Day was proposed by the Prime Minister of India Mr Narendra Modi during the speech at UNGA. As 21 June is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and shares special significance in different parts of the world, PM NARENDRA MODI suggested 21 June as INTERNATIONAL YOGA DAY.

Department of Food, Nutrition and Dietetics, Sir Vithaldas Thackersey College of Home Science (Empowered Autonomous Status), offers a course titled ‘Yoga for Health and Wellbeing’ as one of the Discipline Specific Elective Courses. The department has signed an MOU with the ‘The Yoga Institute’ Santacruz, Mumbai, for the academic purpose, and the trained YOGA teachers from the institute conduct the course for the students.

In collaboration with ‘The Yoga Institute’, the Department of Food, Nutrition and Dietetics plan to celebrate the International Yoga Day on 21 June 2020. The renowned personalities from ‘The Yoga Institute’ will grace the occasion with their presence and will highlight the importance of Yoga in day to day life.
